Meniere’s disease is a condition in which there is an excess of fluid in the inner ear. The excess fluid disturbs the ear’s balance and hearing mechanisms

HISTORY

A 62 year old woman (CS) with five year history of left Meniere’s Syndrome. Significant vertiginous episode occurring one to two times a year, and managing with Serc medication. CS and husband recently started a house cleaning business with long hours, irregular eating times and mainly fast food due to long days. CS now having significant vertiginous episode lasting 4-6 hours, three times a week.

EXAMINATION

CS had reduced balance and reluctance to move spontaneously due to concern of reproducing dizzy symptoms. CS also reported increased tinnitus (noise or ringing) and neck stiffness.

TREATMENT

Advice re regularity of meals and to avoid fast food meals due to fluctuations in salt intake. Home program of balance exercises to assist vestibular function and automatic activity.

OUTCOME

CS reviewed one to two weekly for two treatments with regards balance and secondary cervicogenic (neck) holding, followed by monthly review, at which time CS reported no further vertiginous episodes. Discharged from our care with review if necessary.
