Friday, February 27, 2015/Categories: Case Studies, Neurologial Disorders, Parkinsons Disease

Parkinson's disease is a progressively degenerative neurological disorder which affects the control of body movements

HISTORY

A 46 year old male (NC) diagnosed one year ago with Parkinsons Disease. Had noticed tremor of left hand and stiffness of his left arm eg. Holding arm flexed when walking. Normally runs 30-40 km’s per week – increasing difficulty with this and taking longer to run same distance. Mild reduction in facial movement with tight jaw and difficulty chewing on left side of mouth.

EXAMINATION

NC demonstrates rigidity of upper limb movements – left greater than right, and tightness hip flexors and calves. Mildly reduced muscular activity in face. Mild difficulty with fast, quick movements eg. changes of direction, running and stopping rapidly.

TREATMENT

NC set up with home program of exercises to increase flexibility and trunk rotation, plus high level skills including running – shuttle sprints with turns, boxing and swimming. Education re posture and facial exercises and jaw mobility given.

OUTCOME

Planned review on six monthly basis for reassessment and progress of home program – to be ongoing.
