Brain Injury
Brain trauma can occur as a consequence of a focal impact upon the head, by a sudden acceleration/deceleration within the cranium or by a complex combination of both movement and sudden impact.

A 30 year old elite jockey (HT) suffered a traumatic brain injury in a race fall in 2007. He initially spent two and a half years in rehabilitation centres in Melbourne and Adelaide and then was discharged home. HT was referred to us in 2010 with aims to;
- improve his walking quality, speed and safety,
- improve function in his right arm and hand, and
- return to driving.
EXAMINATION:
HT had increased tone, muscle tightness and impaired strength and control on his right side. His balance was poor and he could only walk short distances with the help of an ankle-foot orthosis and stick.
TREATMENT:
HT has been incredibly committed to attending neurophysiotherapy sessions two to three times per week over the past seven years. He also performs his own gym program several times per week and takes his dog to the dog park on a daily basis.
OUTCOME:
HT has made significant gains with his walking speed and quality. He is now able to walk unaided and without assistive orthotic devices. He drives independently and has achieved much better posturing of his right arm. HT still has further goals that he is continuing to work towards in physiotherapy including participation in a “running course” in Melbourne in 2015/2016.
