Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease in which the insulating covers of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. This damage disrupts the ability of parts of the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a wide range of signs and symptoms, including physical and cognitive disturbances. MS takes several forms, with new symptoms either occurring in isolated attacks (relapsing forms) or building up over time (progressive forms).

Difficulties with mobility, balance, altered increased tone (spasticity) and associated increased fatigue levels are common.

Physiotherapists with an interest in Neurological conditions provide a unique contribution to the management of people with MS through the improvement and maintenance of functional abilities and management of the long term issues with integrated "hands on" and home based programs.
